That’s right. Big Ass Fans.

When I first arrived in Liberia, Costa Rica’s Daniel Oduber airport, I felt a beautiful warm breeze in the passport line. I looked up, and thought “That’s a big fan”. The blades were 24 feet long!! I put my glasses on, and fell in love with the name “Big Ass Fan”.

The company describes their name:

We started in 1999 as the HVLS Fan Company, but after 3 years in business, we finally had to bow to the sentiments of our customers and concede that we do, in fact, design and manufacture some really Big Ass Fans. It was therefore a natural step to change our name to Big Ass Fan Company…

Interesting names in an industry with typically boring names can be very useful. The lovely thing about this moniker is that it’s both interesting and true.  The fans are the biggest you have ever seen.

It’s great to (a) be uniquely different and (b) remind people that you’re different easily in your name.

They might not do too well in the UK, nor in Australia, especially with women:

  1. Very intriguing. I’d be interested in your take on the new move to 3D televisions…..big ass TV experience…but have to wear big ass glasses at all times. Perhaps the 3D wave hasn’t hit Costa Rica though…
